A little bit of work and the right tools and help keep your gas cooktop or range clean and working well for many years.
Tip #1 – Keep a small bottle of all purpose cleaner and a cleaning cloth near the cooktop. You can quickly wipe up any small spills before dry out and set hard.
In today’s fast paced lives we don’t often have time to follow Tip #1 above so a deeper cleaning will be needed. Dont worry though a little bit of effort and time should clean things up just fine.
Here are the tools needed:
- Dish Soap
- Cleaning rags – Microfiber or what ever you have.
- Water – Preferably warm water as it will help soften any stuck on bits.
- All Purpose cleaning spray
- Baking Soda – optional
- A brush – Just a general cleaning brush. You don’t want the bristles too thick as it might scratch the cooktop finish. A clean paint brush might work in a pinch.
First you need to be able to get to the cooktop so remove the burner grates. Place them in the sink or on a rack to you can spray them with the cleaner to wipe down later. Remove the knobs and let them sit in the warm water with a little bit of cleaner. Optionally you can pull the covers off the burners and let them soak as well.
Take your brush or a damp rag and wipe all the lose debris off of the cooktop. Be careful around the burners if you took the burner caps off. Spray the cleaner on the cooktop, again being careful around the burners if the protective caps are off. There is no need to rush this, let the cleaner work for a little bit. Then take a damp rag and wipe everything down. Any tough spots can be sprayed with cleaner a second time and scrubbed with the brush to loosen them so they can be wiped away. Or this is where you can use the baking soda on the tough spot and scrubbed with a rag if you don’t have a brush. Or are worried the brush you have might scratch the finish of the cooktop.
Last take the knobs and wipe or brush them clean. Take the burner grates and give them a wipe down of scrub as need. Rinse and let all knobs and grates dry before putting everything back together.
Tip #2 – Most burner grates can be ran thorough the dishwasher. Look up your model first and follow any instructions they have.
